Dr. Julian Schmitt from the Institute of Applied Physics has been awarded the Wissenschaftspreis 2024 by the Industrie-Club Düsseldorf e.V. for his groundbreaking research on quantum gases of photons, which on the one hand expand the understanding of quantum states in fundamental science and on the other hand can produce new technological components for the sensor technology or control of laser beams.
The prize ceremony took place on the 3rd of June 2024 in the house of the Industrie-Club e.V. in Düsseldorf. The prize was awarded by Dirk Grolmann (President of the Industrie-Club Düsseldorf e.V.), Minister Ina Brandes (Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia) and Prof. Dr. Gerd Heusch (North Rhine-Westphalian Academy for Sciences and Arts). Prof. Dr. Dieter Meschede (Institute of Applied Physics, University of Bonn) who is also a member of the member of the Academy of Sciences delivered a personal Laudatio for the awardee.
Since 1998, the Industrie-Club Düsseldorf has been awarding the "Wissenschaftspreis des Industrie-Clubs" in cooperation with the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy for Sciences and Arts. The prize, which is awarded every two years in different specialist areas, aims to promote innovative scientific research that deserves to be implemented in industrial production or the further development of production processes. It is aimed at scientists below the age of 40 in NRW and is endowed with EUR 20,000.
